A Hospital Internship in Ghana

September 13, 2016

Medical missionary Oleta Witt has moved to Nalerigu, in the Northern Region of Ghana, where she is working as an intern at Baptist Medical Centre for three months. This is an important part of her training, as she will be able to work in all the different departments of the hospital.

Baptist Medical Centre was started in 1958, and has grown to a 123 bed facility. Its website states that in a recent year it saw, "60,000 outpatient visits, 10,000 inpatients, 1,200 major operations, and 2,500-3,000 minor procedures."  The hospital was recognized by the Ghanaian government in the 1990s for its handling of an outbreak of cerebrospinal meningitis, and was presented with the Medal of honor by Ghanaian President Flt. Lt. Jerry Rawlings.

Oleta recently recovered from a bout with malaria, and is doing well. She wrote, "It was hard to leave all my friends in city where I was staying, but the people here are great and very helpful. Already, I have learned so much about African medicine."

Thank you for your prayers for Oleta during her internship!
