Bethany resident, Evalyn Lorene Rose-Nielsen-Schaper, 97, went to her Heavenly Home on Tuesday, August 14, 2018. She was born September 16, 1920 in Ellis County, Oklahoma to William H. and Emily (Houts) Herndon. Evalyn was a graduate of May High School, and then went on to attend Kansas City College and Bible School where she earned her 4-year degree. She then received her RN from a 3-year diploma program. Evalyn was a missionary nurse and spent 9 years in Bolivia. After returning home, she married Thomas Cody Rose on February 20, 1960 and she was blessed with three step-children, Carol, Gary and Ramona. They served the Lord together as missionaries, returning to Bolivia and adopting their daughter, Jacqueline. Evalyn and Cody enjoyed 29 years together before his passing in May of 1989. In May of 1994, she married Robert Nielsen and her family grew with the addition of five more step-children, Robert, Roberta, Ester, Maria and Dan. They enjoyed life together for almost 14 years before his passing in January of 2008. At the beautiful age of 93, Evalyn married Melvin Schaper in October of 2013 and her family grew even more with the addition of seven more step-children, Ruth, Nathan, Steven, Albert, Charlie, Kent and Quentin. Melvin passed away in August of 2015. Evalyn was a faithful and active member of Calvary Bible Fellowship, having attended since 1989. She rarely missed a Sunday and was involved in the Children’s Ministry, Vacation Bible School, and was “The” designer of the felt boards. Evalyn was a gifted artist and loved to paint, and would always make the felt boards extra special! She also enjoyed gardening and flowers. She loved to go thrift store shopping and was always hunting for a good bargain. In her mind, there was no reason to pay full price for anything! Her wonderful sense of humor, her love of the color pink, and her steadfast Faith in God will forever stay with her family. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Cody, Robert, and Melvin; brothers, Alva Herndon and Ray Noble; sister, Dessa O’Hair; and grandson, Dwayne Rose. She is survived by her daughter, Jacqueline Farley; 15 step children; countless grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; as well as a niece, numerous nephews, other family members and dear friends. The family would like to thank Express Home Help and Good Shepherd Hospice for their loving care, not only to Evalyn, but to her family as well. Visitation will be 5pm-7pm Monday at Guardian West Funeral Home. Services will be 10:30am Tuesday at Calvary Bible Fellowship with Pastor Mark Calderon and Pastor Phillip Mills officiating. Interment will follow at Bethany Cemetery.
