Splashes of color, tropical plants, green hills, a yellow and white striped tent set up for the occasion. A crowd of onlookers, Papua New Guineans dancing in grass skirts and intricate headdresses with animal-skin drums. It was a joyful parade.
But none of these things were the focus. Everywhere people were holding books of red, blue, and black. These were the cause for the celebration — 233 New Testaments translated over the last 70 years through the ministry of SIL PNG, a partner organization to Wycliffe. Other milestones were commemorated, as well.
Member of Parliament Hon. John Boito spoke appreciation for SIL's work. “SIL is an integral part of my district. This is not just an anniversary — it is a moment of national pride." Later, he added, "You have told our people that God speaks their language.”
Today, SIL PNG continues its work in 145 languages throughout the country, one of these being the Solos language which missionary Larry Doyle oversees. Please continue to pray for this vital ministry. Spiritual growth is severely hindered without access to the Word of God.
