A Glimpse of a Village Trip

The last two weeks of May were good, but busy. While Christy and the boys were doing many of the end-of-school things at Ukarumpa, Larry was out in Buka doing a multi-purpose village trip.

It started with making arrangements for the final segment of the Translators’ Training Course 1, which was planned for Kahule village, but no one had heard from them in quite a while. So Larry visited that village and had talks with the translators and village leadership to set a date (June 23 - July 04), venue, and other logistics for the course.

Then he ventured to the eastern part of the language area for three days of trekking around to six different villages to collect wordlists for the Dialect Survey. While doing that, he also distributed the literacy books to 12 different villages and their schools.

The final week of the trip was spent at Tung, working with the team to finalize the first 15 chapters of Joshua, type up three more chapters of back translation of Joshua with the new team members (for checking), translate many of the collected Solos stories into English (for checking), and collect pages of new dictionary words. During this time he also distributed Solos books to the other seven villages. At the end of the second week, he made it back to Port Moresby and home by Monday.
